Ariel Mitchell’s work relies on intensely observing individual objects and surfaces and translating what she sees into oil paint. Each painting is built empirically, receiving a different treatment depending on the subject. The subjects range from things in her studio such as her desk, books, and other paintings, to her apartment floor and the gallery floor. These hyper-literal works hover between trompe l’oeil and stage props, offering a humorous, deadpan take on contemporary life while questioning the nature of painting.
