Cristina Covucci
Cristina Covucci (b.1985, Dallas, Texas) is an artist and art worker based in New York. She holds an MFA in Sculpture from CUNY Hunter College, and a BFA in Ceramics with a minor in Literature from Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Crafts. Group exhibitions include Some Greater Sum, 205 Hudson Street Gallery, New York (2021); No Kid Hungry, ZH Projects, Brooklyn (2020); The Lower East Side Girls Club, Fergus McCaffrey, New York (2020); Act I, and Scene II, 205 Project Space, New York (2018). In 2018, several of Cristina’s works were on view at Gagosian Shop, New York.

Cristina Covucci’s work explores how value systems are constructed according to false, yet persistent binaries. Putting various symbols and objects into relation—including Roman mythological creatures, the machinery of blue collar labor, domestic and wild animals, and protective sports gear—her sculptures create scenarios that reveal and subvert dichotomies of individual/team, human/animal, white collar/blue collar, and wild/tamed. Drawing on years of training as an athlete and an art handler, Cristina uses processes of mold-making, carving, ceramics, drafting, and combining found materials in ways that connect the fast-paced strategic planning of sports and gallery display.

Hunter MFA
This spring, the Hunter College MFA Program in Studio Art will graduate 26 artists who completed their degree over the challenging months of the COVID-19 pandemic. These talented MFA Thesis Candidates are exhibiting their work in six group exhibitions at 205 Hudson, in addition to this online spotlight hosted by Hauser & Wirth. At time when the public audience for in-person exhibitions has been limited by the pandemic, we are excited to provide this digital platform to the emerging artists from Hunter College’s MFA Program in Studio Art.
