This new body of work sees the artist at once exploring a personal symbolism in greater depth and expanding his material vocabulary to include terra cotta. The imagery, which consists primarily of landscapes, still lifes and patterned motifs, is marked by the landscape of the American southwest, his Mexican-American heritage, pre-columbian iconography, and the painting of American masters such as Forrest Bess and Arthur Dove. The work’s small scale, vibrant palette, and multiplicity of textures conspire toward a unique experience of painting as intimate as it is captivating.
