The Breeder presents an eclectic selection of paintings by Jannis Varelas with each work epitomizing a different period of the artist’s ouvre. In his work Varelas explores the concepts of identity and alterity, iconophilia and iconoclasm, sameness and difference, the normal and the abnormal, impulse and repulsion, melancholy and ecstasy, the binary and the multiple gender. His practice is best approached as a phychosexual and cultural anthropology of the contemporary.

The Breeder
The Breeder gallery was founded in 2002 by George Vamvakidis and Stathis Panagoulis. It developed organically from The Breeder magazine that started in 2000, out of the need to build an artistic dialogue between Athens and the world. Over the past eighteen years, The Breeder gallery has been a pioneer in the development of the contemporary art scene in Athens.
